Although it has ornamental uses, the trumpet has toxic and psychoactive properties. Traditional pre-Columbian cultures used it in shamanic rituals, linked to healing practices and spiritual experiences of expanding consciousness. It is associated with women in rituals involving incantations. Some Amazonian indigenous peoples use the plant as an additive to intensify the effects of ayahuasca.
