MEDICINAL, AFRODISIC AND RITUAL USE

Jurema is used by the indigenous peoples of north-eastern Brazil to treat physical and mental ailments, as well as being an aphrodisiac and an element of love magic. In popular pharmacopoeia, it fights weakness and tiredness. Since the 16th century, missionaries have mentioned its use in Brazil. Its magical-religious use was documented in the 19th century, appearing in literary works such as Iracema and Os Sertões. Studied by scientists such as Câmara Cascudo, it is used in Afro-Amerindian cults and by indigenous peoples in sacred rituals such as toré.
